OUR STORY
Inspired by a love of woodwork and a passion to explore the art of steam bending, Woodbender was founded in 1988 by Charles Mast, soon joined by his wife Shirley and father John. From the outset, we specialised in bending solid wooden timber, reviving a closely guarded tradition from 1700s Europe.
Through hands-on trial and error, our founding team taught themselves the intricate process of bending kiln-dried timber, and even constructed much of the custom machinery required. This dedication to mastering the art of steam bending laid the foundation for Woodbender, where innovation and craftsmanship have always gone hand in hand.
our legacy
Over the past three decades, Woodbender has grown through experimentation with various timbers and designs, culminating in our exceptional Collection of bentwood dining chairs, stools, and dining tables. Every piece is made to order, crafted locally in the Cape Winelands of South Africa, using sustainably sourced Ash timber from certified forests. From a small office unit to our current large-scale factory, the company now supplies both the South African, UK, and international markets.
Today, Charles and Shirley’s son, Andy Mast, proudly continues his parents' legacy, ensuring that Woodbender remains a name synonymous with artisanal craftsmanship.
